Today is the first day of her treatment. And all that she can think of during the forty five minute drive to the hospital is that perfect afternoon last Summer that she spent laying on her back in the grass, without a care in the world, naming the clouds.

the host
I want you to climb a mountain, she says.
On her request we unfold a map on the veranda table, and follow her finger while she tells about views, flowers, and water that is clear enough to drink directly from the stream.

oorlogsschip
Enkele dieren blijven even midden in een vennetje staan.

Cheakamus Lake Trail
The narrow path bends it's way forward through the cedar forest. To my right, the tiny beaches along the south shores of Cheakamus Lake reflect in the sun.
After a while I arrive at a remote wilderness campsite, now deserted. Thin steel ropes with clips at the end hang down from a high branch, pointing out to campers where to hoist and safely store their food.
Continuing my hike, my steps immediately resume to determine the rhythmic tinkling sounds of the bear bell attached to my backpack.

yesterday's paper
Again a heavy thunderstorm reminds me of camping holidays from my childhood: a wonderful 3 weeks in the Italian Alps with our frame tent. In my memory storms like these only occurred during the dark hours of the night, like they do so often here as well.
So, under the deafening sounds of torrential rains and thunder we would all get dressed and sit in the tent (ready to flee to the car, I guessed later). And while we were waiting until the worst was over, my dad did his inspection rounds to make sure everything remained dry inside. Or, when windgusts let the tent shake as if it could lift from the ground any moment, taking us and everything in it, he would pop out wearing a rain coat and holding a flash light to see if all the tent pegs were still in place.
Thinking back now I can imagine all kinds of things that could have gone wrong. But for some reason I never felt afraid then.

thunder
I am not afraid to die, he says, I still take the maximum out of each day like I always did. And I have an excellent doctor, she is the most clever lady I have ever met, I do everything she says and nothing more. No matter what people say.
I am told that he is a very sick man, and that his name is on the waiting list for a transplantation. Hence the temporary job, until his operation, whenever that will be.
But it's my wife, he sighs, she is driving me absolutely crazy. She cannot understand that I won't search on the Internet all day and grasp every single possibility there is in the world to get better.
With his eyes on me I nod, not knowing what to say. It would be easy to agree and take his side. Obviously I admire the way he deals with it all, and I have never actually met his wife, but how could I NOT sympathize with her?

Athabasca Glacier
After my husband agrees to take her picture she hands over her camera and turns towards me: Would you like to be on the photo with me? Without hesitation I agree. Why not? A moment later we stand close together like good friends and smile into the camera.
That evening I wonder why I hadn't asked this girl anything. She was clearly travelling alone. Who was she, why was she on her own, where was she going? And what will she say when a friend watches her photo's and asks who I am?

oerbos

even een glimlach / a brief smile
een hele dag regen
stroopgezichten

in de berm vlak na de bocht
een vaas met bloemen
schoolreünie
bij binnenkomst beweegt
even het skelet
oud-collega
haar geweldige nieuwe baan
komt tussen ons in
met elke auto die passeert
wordt de haas groter
mussengekwetter
klinkt door in de rouwkamer
even een glimlach

rain all day
treacle faces
in the porridge
in the verge just after the turn
a vase with flowers
upon entering
the skeleton stirs for a moment
school reunion
former colleague
her brilliant new job
comes between us
with every car that passes
the hare becomes bigger
the chirp of sparrows
heard in the mortuary
a brief smile
